Personality Prevails
I have found that personality is very important when choosing a haircut. There is a lot said about the shape of the face, the season, or your age when it comes to choosing a haircut, but not so much about personality. There are some face shapes and ages that can wear a funky style, but most stylists would not recommend that for their client based on conventional knowledge.
I try to pull in all of the factors, but my favorite mantra is "if you have the confidence you can pull anything you want to off." There are, of course, some things that are flattering to no one and I try to help clients keep that in mind as well. Help your stylist by letting them know about your lifestyle, the things you like, the era's that interest you, how much time you have to style it and, most importantly, bring pictures.
You don't have to be a wild child to pull off funkiness and there are certainly ways to modify a funky cut to make you feel more comfortable. One great thing about sticking to a stylist is they get to know you and can suggest new things to do.
The main point I am getting to is don't let your face shape limit what you do with your hair. If you like something a lot then go for it. But always keep in mind you WILL look different from the person in the picture.
This is one of my clients. She loves picking blueberries, playing the piano, crazy socks, and all things vintage.
